Barry Sanders is widely regarded as the greatest player in Oklahoma State football history. The Wichita, Kansas native spent his first two years as an effective backup to star upperclassman Thurman Thomas and a star returner on special teams, but once he got his chance to start, he took the country by storm. Sanders led the country in many statistics for running backs, but most notably broke college football single-season records with 2,628 rushing yards and 37 rushing touchdowns; records that still stand today. Among other awards, Sanders took home the sport’s top prize and was recognized as college football’s top player with the Heisman Trophy, the first and only in Oklahoma State football history. His retired number 21 is featured in the Oklahoma State Football Ring of Honor and he is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame. Sanders would go on to represent Oklahoma State as one of its greatest NFL players, putting on a stella Pro Football Hall of Fame career.
