The very first NHL Heritage Classic was held on November 22, 2003, at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton, Alberta between the Montreal Canadiens and the Edmonton Oilers. It was the first NHL regular season game to be played outdoors and was a hit, drawing a crowd of 57,167 despite temperatures of close to -22 degrees Fahrenheit. 20 years later the Oilers again hosted the Heritage Classic, the 7th ever Heritage Classic was to feature the first ever outdoor version of “The Battle of Alberta”, the Oilers vs the Flames. With both teams featuring custom jerseys specifically designed for the Classic and the Oilers featuring the NHL’s best in Connor McDavid, the hype was again at a fever pitch. Before a sellout crowd of more than 55,000, the Oilers would beat the Flames 5-2 and with the help of McDavid (1 assist) would win the first ever outdoor version of the Battle of Alberta.
