Boasting an international resume of three gold medals already, Connor McDavid went into the 4 Nations Faceoff still with a lot to prove as this was the first ever tournament of its kind and featured games against Canada’s biggest rival the United States. Amid the usual competitive rivalry amongst players and heightened political tension between the two countries going into the tournament, patriotism was at all time high not only between the players but also the fans. All eyes were on the championship game between the United States and Canada where after seeing the Americans take a 2-1 lead just over 7 minutes into the second period Team Canada would respond by tying the game at 2 with 6 minutes to go in the 2nd. The game would stay that way until McDavid’s goal at 8:18 into the overtime period sent the Canadiens home happy. While it is not an official medaled event, the significance could not be understated, the championship game broke viewership records, and McDavid’s tournament winning goal sent all of Canada into celebration.
