In one of the most anticipated hockey rivalry games ever, Team Canada avenged its loss
to Team USA earlier in the tournament with an exciting 3-2 win in overtime. The hero,
to no one’s surprise, was Connor McDavid, snapping in a wrist shot in front of the
net past USA goalie Connor Hellebuyck. The game marked the largest audience for
a hockey game ever on ESPN. Having previously losing in the tournament to the United
States 3-1 all the talk had been about how much tougher the USA had been compared
to Canada, McDavid and company put all of that to rest in the championship game.
McDavid finished the tournament with 3 goals and 2 assists (5 points). McDavid’s
game winning goal was his first ever game ending (and ultimately tournament
ending) goal in international play. His performance in the final game earned
him Player of the Game honors.
