" ANOTHER LONESOME NIGHT "
Often time we thing about cowboys as seen in the movies but in reality they where hard working man in miserable conditions most of the time and away from home for months. True cowboys learned to be contended with very little. But at dawn after a hard working day this cowboy has found refuge near an old wagon to set a fire and to end the day with a nice comforting warm tea. I enjoyed doing this painting full of it's wonderful textures such as old weathered wood, rusty metal and the challenge texture of the clothing. A true delight to create a moment in honor our our great history that will never be forgotten.
Most of us tend to think of cowboys as the romantics depicted in the movies....the good guys, the sheriffs and the bad guys with guns. That was at a time when the West was indeed a wild, lawless place. There were however real cowboys who were hardworking individuals who spent most of their time in the saddle protecting or herding cattle over vast distances and living in squalid conditions along the way. The real cowboy only got to relax when the sun went down and after he had fed and watered his horse.
The cowboy depicted in this painting was one of those good guys who, after a long grueling day in the saddle, camped down beside this old wagon to brew himself a pot of hot tea and maybe some soup or canned beans before unrolling his bedroll and settling down to sleep until sun-up when his work would start all over. No fancy showers or washing machines in the “good old days”. Maybe a swim in the river or a muddy waterhole....maybe a bath when he reached his destination if he was lucky. It’s interesting to imagine what a cowboy’s life was like in those days. I have enjoyed doing this painting with its interesting textures of old weathered wood, rusty metal, leather and fabrics and so on. It’s my very first cowboy painting and hopefully not my last. It is through paintings such as this that the history of the early cowboys in the Americas and beyond will live on. They were, and still are, a breed of tough individuals.
