I can remember walking through the forest when I was just a young boy and hearing the scary noises all
around me. I used to imagine that there were all kinds of animals behind every tree. Even now, as an
adult, when I hike the mountains I wonder if I will be lucky or unlucky enough to encounter a wolf or
a bear or cougar. I am always on the lookout and I check behind me from time to time just in case, for
cougars usually attack from behind. I sometimes wonder what goes through their mind when these animals
see or smell humans in their territory. One early summer’s evening, I took my family for a walk through a
local park and suddenly, not far away, we saw a coyote. It had already noticed us and as we walked it came
closer and closer. We didn’t feel any fear and it also didn’t appear to be particularly worried about us. The
boys thought that perhaps it was lonely and wanted some friendly company. Eventually, it just lost
interest and disappeared into the long grass. A solitary wolf might well act the same way. So next time
you are out in the forest thinking you are alone, stop from time to time and look around you because
some curious beast may be checking you out. To me, exploring the outdoors is like opening the
wrappings on a present. I know I am not alone out there and I am always full of expectancy at what I
might encounter at any moment.
