Bobby Orr became the only defenseman in NHL history to win the Art Ross Trophy as the league’s leading scorer. He didn’t just accomplish this once; he did it twice, the first time in 1970 and again five years later in 1975. At just 21 years old, Orr finished the 1970 season with 120 points (33 goals, 87 assists), winning the scoring title by 21 points, which secured the Art Ross. Five years later in 1975, Orr finished the season with 135 points (46 goals, 89 assists) to secure his second Art Ross. Winning the Art Ross in 1970 proved that a defenseman could lead the league in scoring; winning it again in 1975, despite years of knee surgeries, proved that Orr’s hockey IQ and shooting ability were just as lethal as his legendary skating.
