By the midway mark of the 1971–72 season, Bobby Orr was in the middle of a legendary run that had already changed the way hockey was played. He had just finished a record-breaking 139-point season the year before and was the reigning winner of three Norris Trophies and two Hart Trophies. When the 1972 All-Star Game took place on January 25, Orr led all defensemen in scoring and ranked second in the league overall. Because he was the top vote-getter among blueliners, he was selected as a starter for the East Division team. During the game, the East defeated the West 3–2, and Orr was named the game’s MVP. Although he only recorded one assist, he earned the award by completely controlling the pace of the play and showing off his elite defensive skills. This was a major milestone because Orr became the first defenseman in NHL history to be named the All-Star Game MVP.
