Bobby Orr’s 1971-72 season started as a continuation of possibly the most dominant multi-year stretch by any player in NHL history. He had just completed a record breaking 139-point season the previous year and was the reigning three-time Norris Trophy and two-time Hart Trophy winner. By the time the 1972 NHL All-Star Game took place on January 25, 1972, Orr led all defensemen in scoring and was second in the league overall. Orr was selected as a starter for the East Division All-Star team as he was the leading vote getter among defensemen. The East Division defeated the West Division 3-2 while Orr earned the All-Star Game MVP award. During the game, he recorded one assist, displayed an elite defensive presence, and controlled the pace of the game. Orr was the first defenseman in NHL history to be named the All-Star Game MVP.
