In the warming air and still cold snow of an approaching spring day, this
“Amur” tiger is walking down a path and out of the mist in the Amur-Ussuri
region of Russia. Just like much of the world’s wildlife, this tiger is often
misrepresented and misunderstood. The “Amur” tiger is often mistakenly
called the “Siberian” tiger; however, it is not found in Siberia as the name
would suggest. The “Siberian” name was thought to be a more exotic
description, given to the species by Americans. The tiger’s proper name is
“Amur,” indicating its native range in the Amur region of Russia. This
piece is a tribute to both the natural beauty of the animal and its rich,
distinctive heritage in the country.
