White-Breasted Nuthatch on Beech Tree - Robert Bateman

"This little “upside-down” bird is a favorite of everyone who knows him.
He is constantly checking all the cracks and crevices of tree trunks and branches.
He makes use of every possible body angle to reach those hard to get at places.
He seems never to rest.  I don’t recall seeing a nuthatch in repose.

I like his looks. You could say that he is nattily attired. He is almost formal
with his black cap, gray back and crisply marked wings and tail, but his fluffy
little rust-colored bottom gives him a zany touch more appropriate to his
character. His nasal "yank-yank" call also fits the zany image.

I have two feeders right outside the window where I sit and paint. One
has sunflower seeds; the other is a suet log. Nuthatches vie with the
chickadees and goldfinches for the seeds and with the woodpeckers
for the suet. They are so close that I can see the expression in the eye.
The nuthatch eye has an oriental look, or rather the look of an oriental
eye done in stage makeup with the little line traveling from the back of it. "
